Episode 66: Fantasy Wargaming, ed. by Bruce Galloway

Welcome to the first game review of 2026, and it’s a doozy. Fantasy Wargaming: The Highest Level of All, edited by Bruce Galloway, and published in 1981, is famous (notorious?) for clunky rules, odd premises, and far too much about how terrible the Dark Ages were. Despite no Halflings or Hobbits in the game, your Fab 4 Halflings review the game and blame DM Mike for choosing it after years of threats to do so. Come for the Lions with one head and two bodies, stay for the Devil Worship!

No PCs were harmed in the making of this podcast, though female PCs are pretty ticked off!

    Bad Mike. Bad bad Mike.

Your demise promises to be epic.
    Please record it.

    Quote of the episode:

“What makes the save – this book is out of print.”

    Queen Liz drops the hammer.
    Long may you wave.

Somehow it’s nice to know that some British people could be stupider than the creators of Tunnels and Trolls and more racist and sexist than the creator of Empire of the petal throne. I think the Attribute of Size is always a mistake in a game of Fantasy and I don’t think Corbet is a monster. Another big mistake in games and in life is to give any credence to astrology.

I am morbidly interested in the terrible combat system. Great Show.
